Homesteading BookWell I just finished reviewing a brand new homesteading book by Abigail R. Gehring. The title is "Homesteading: A Back to Basics Guide to Growing Your Own Food, Canning, Keeping Chickens, Generating Your Own Energy, Crafting, Herbal Medicine, and More". This is a very nice hardcover book with lots of great details and contributions from many established homesteaders. Our very own Kathleen contributed an article to the book as well. You may remember...

Abigale R. Gehring for another best seller homesteading book, Back to Basics: A Complete Guide to Traditional Skills, Third Edition . We have and recommend both of these books. When your copy of Homesteading arrives, don't forget to check out page 30 for Kathleen's article about The Yardstead.

I received this book for Christmas. I would have to agree with Kathleen above, it is not very detailed, but provides a good basis for more exploration. I am a big fan of the canning section, it cannot replace the Ball Blue Book as far as recipes are concerned, but I really benefited from processing information and basically the science behind canning. A definite must have guide for a person thinking about a simpler life.

This book gives a general overview of many topics you might want to learn if you are truly interested in being more self sufficient. It gives you an idea of some of the areas you will need to get more information on. It will not make you an expert at any one area...but it will give you enough information to get started. Also, the back of the book has many sources listed for more detailed information. The book has great pictures and illustrations!
